Introduction:

Huanghuacheng Great Wall, about 60 kilometers (37.3 miles) from Beijing, and also known as the Great Wall under the Water, is one of the most ruined sections of the wall in Beijing.

Built in the 15th century, the wall was a military fortress defending the capital as well as imperial tomb cluster, the Ming Tombs. The wall is approximately 14 kilometers long, snaking over the mountain ridge or ducking in and out of the water, a singularly wonderful landscape.

Three separate sections of the Huanghuacheng are submerged in the Xishuiyu Reservoir. It is famous for its harmonious mixture of the splendid wall, an awesome mountain and a great wide swath of water. This resort attracts the discerning visitor who wants to gad around off the beaten track.

The reservoir is called Huanghuacheng Reservoir, and the lake along with it is Jintang lake. The water of the lake is cold and clear for all year round due to the numerous springs.

How did the ancient workers build such a grand wall underwater? This feat is not the work of the ancients, but a modern marvel. Parts of Huanghuacheng Great Wall were damaged and fell into Jintang Lake after being bombed during the Chinese Anti-Japanese war a century ago. In 1974, China built the Xishuiyu Reservoir and the water level rose; consequently, some low-lying sections were inundated. Seen from the dam of the reservoir, the stately sunken wall is still visible.

It has become popular with hikers in recent years. This section of the Great Wall is about 1000 meters long and connecting Juyongguan Pass Great Wall and Badaling Great Wall in the west and Jiankou Great Wall and Mutianuyu Great Wall in the east. Now it is a quite challenge to climb the wall since it has no stone steps or no smooth path found at other sections of Great Wall in Beijing.

The chestnut trees along the wall tell stories of the lives of their planters, who guarded the wall. These trees are over 500 years old and cover an area of 16.5 acres. Even though many years have passed, these trees still flourish. When summer comes, yellow flowers bloom and cover the broken wall with sudden, exhilarating life. That is why we call it Huanghuacheng (Yellow-Flowered Wall) in Chinese.

Our camping trip and your journey will begin right here in the marvelous scenery. No better time than sunrise and sunset here could you be able to capture. Unlike many tourist destinations in and around Beijing, it is absolutely serene. At night the only light is from a sky full of stars. And you can almost hear horses and soldiers in the stillness. Even if you've been many times before, this is a truly unique experience on the wall, a favorite of many!

Group size over 20 please send us an email for a better rate request.

We DON’T earn money by taking you to commission shopping stores or jade factories, which is a common touristic phenomenon in China, wasting your time. Our guides are carefully selected, highly trained to be friendly and patient travel companions. We are not only the cheapest, but also one of the best.

Important Pionts: We are the FINAL OPERATOR of this tour. We organize, operate, and supervise the whole process of it. If you stay at some other hostels in the neighborhood and book the same tour from them, they could be our clients and not the real operator, they could finally arrange you to different places as they likely plan because they normally have several supplying companies operating different tours.

Detailed itinerary:

We depart from downtown Beijing in early afternoon and arrive at the Wall around 16:00.

You need to carry the sleeping bags and tents by yourself to walk on the wall. It takes around more than 1 hour.

Then it will be your free time, pitching the tents and having picnic.

Watch the sunrise the next morning and return to the city after breakfast.

The experience was amazing. But the minimum group size is 5 people, or you need to take it as a private tour which is very expensive. Fortunately we are 5 in the group. - Joe
